Followers of both Buddhism and Shinto observe auspicious days and pilgrimages. Passages of life are also celebrated and specific costumes are often donned to mark these rites.
Shinto Faith
Shinto originated in prehistoric Japan as a combination of nature and ancestor worship. The ceremonies and festivals of the Shinto religion celebrate aspects of life, from the planting and harvesting of rice to auspicious birthdays.
Buddhist Faith
Buddhism was brought to Japan from China in the 6th century C.E., and is most evident in Japan in the worship of ancestors through funerary and memorial rites. Many Japanese combine practices from both Buddhist and Shinto religions.
